’13 Undergraduate Internship Program

Title: 2013 Causal Consequences of Variation Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program
Location: Harvard Medical School
Duration: 10-week internships beginning in mid-June 2013

The Church Lab (Department of Genetics) is offering this paid internship to sophomore, juniors, and seniors who have not yet earned their bachelor’s degree. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents (green card holders) from underrepresented minority groups. The internship will provide the opportunity to gain research experience in many areas of genome science research. It will also provide a more in depth knowledge of biological science and genomics. Among other things, interns will be able to work on supervised independent projects, work closely with scientists, and seminars provided by scientists and researchers from various institutions. The internship requires 40 hours a week are devoted and provides a stipend of $4,000.

Description: This position coordinates Washington Internships for Native Students (WINS) a program designed to provide experiential education to American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) college students from tribal colleges and other institutions of higher learning across the country. The incumbent will serve as the primary contact for AI/AN/NH student recruitment, enrolled students, academic programs and internship aspects, and all the administrative details of the Program. Collaborates with Washington Semester staff, WINS faculty and others throughout the university to ensure an excellent experiential learning program. This position works with AU staff to ensure thorough record-keeping and reporting of student and program information. This position works in partnership with the WINS Advisory Board on policy and interaction with the AI/AN/NH community.

Educational Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 4 years of working with AI/AN/NH education
  • Familiarity with AI/AN/NH issues
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work in a dynamic and innovative environment
  • Must have significant experience working with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint software
Preferred Requirements: Higher education teaching and administration background

Additional Information: This is a professional, exempt position, and the incumbent may be asked to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice. The incumbent must be able to work occasionally in evenings and weekends.

Part-Time Faculty at Native American
Public Health

Job description: This course begins with an overview of the historical roots of health disparities among Native Americans. Students will then examine the experience of diseases, risk factors, and causes of death among Native Americans in Nations across the US, including the role of substance abuse in contributing to health disparities. The last portion of the course considers the many aspects of Native American Culture that contribute to wellness, including indigenous foodways, fitness, and Native American indigenous knowledge as an adjunct to chemical dependency treatment. This class is offered on Monday evenings at 6:45 to 9:30pm beginning January 14, 2013 until May 6, 2013.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in public health, community health, social work, or other relevant discipline and professional experience in Native American health. Previous university teaching experience preferred.
